John Parker, Urban Tree Guru, joins the Start with Local Advisory Panel
We’re really excited that John Parker from the London Tree Officer’s Association has joined the Start with Local Advisory Panel.
John is a Senior Arboriculture & Landscape Specialist in London. He is a member of the London Tree Officers Association (LTOA) Executive Committee and was Chair of the LTOA from 2016-2018. Amongst his priorities is to promote the importance of urban trees and the work of public sector tree officers and managers. He is a Chartered Arboriculturist with the Institute of Chartered Foresters, a Professional Member of the Arboricultural Association and an Associate Member of the Royal Society for Biology. In 2017 John was awarded the title of European Young Urban Forester of the Year by the European Forum on Urban Forestry. John is a regular contributor to industry publications and conferences in the UK and internationally.
Listen to John taking passionately about urban trees in his recent TedX Canton talk: ‘Why trees are better than people’.
Street trees are amazing. They look great, make us feel great, cool our overheated cities, mitigate localised flooding, soak up pollution, and even increase house prices.
John’s joins our advisory panel at a crucial moment – we’re working to develop a not-for-profit digital platform to help councils offer their residents the ability to go online to either adopt-a-street-tree, or pay for a dedication-tree to fill that empty space outside their house or other nearby locality, via an intuitive ordering system. Bringing together a modern retail approach, along with collaboration (council + residents + voluntary groups), and crowd-funding from multiple sources, has the very real potential to create a step-change in the volume of street tree planting. We’re on a mission to fill our streets with trees.
Welcome John. We look forward to your advice and insights as this project progresses.
